Rehabilitation at home in Hue

Rehabilitation is the one clinical thing where the patient does most of the work and the visiting therapist is mainly a corrector. That suits home visits well: our local therapists come in a planned block, set the exercises, watch them being done badly, fix the detail that matters, and leave a programme for the days nobody is here.

Most referrals arrive after an operation or a stroke managed at Hue Central Hospital, which means the medical part is already decided and written down. What is usually missing is the dull continuity afterwards — the fortnight in which a knee quietly stiffens because the sheet of exercises went into a drawer.

Areas we go to most

Houses here often put the bathroom a step down and the bedroom up a flight, so the first session usually goes on thresholds and a handrail rather than on the joint itself.

In the wet months an outdoor walking programme stops being realistic for weeks at a time, so we write the indoor version from the start instead of discovering in November that the plan assumed dry pavement.

Because a block of sessions is a journey, we would rather give you three longer visits than six short ones; exercises do not improve by being watched more often, but technique drifts when nobody checks it at all.

New numbness, a calf that swells on one side, or a fall with a knock to the head ends the session and starts a hospital conversation; if the person is unwell with any of it, 115 comes first.

If this is an emergency — trouble breathing, chest pain, heavy bleeding, loss of consciousness or signs of a stroke — please call 115 or go to the nearest hospital first. Please do not wait for a home visit.

What is included

An assessment comes first: what the person can do today, and what the next fortnight can realistically change

The exercises use your own stairs, doorways and bathroom, because those are the obstacles that stay behind after a session ends

Whoever is at home learns the daily set, and how to shift the patient without hurting either of them

Progress is measured the same way at every visit, and a plateau is reported plainly instead of padded out

Where a surgeon has set a protocol, it is followed, and load or range is not changed without asking the team that operated

Red flags go in writing: a newly drooping face, speech that has become slurred, or weakness down one side means 115 and a hospital, not another session

Questions we are asked

Questions we are asked

How many sessions will this take?

Nobody honest answers that at the first visit. We can say what the next two weeks look like and what we expect to see by the end of them, then re-plan from what actually happened. A therapist who names a total before watching you move once is selling a package, not a plan.

Can a family member be taught the hands-on parts?

The safe parts, yes, and we expect it here. Positioning, assisted movement, a walking escort and the stretch that has to happen daily are all teachable in one visit. Anything that involves forcing a stiff joint stays with the therapist, because the difference between a useful stretch and a setback is felt rather than measured.
