Medication review and refills for long stays on Phu Quoc

Long stays are this island's pattern. People book a villa for a month, bring exactly the boxes the pharmacy at home handed over, and somewhere in week three a blister pack runs short. A review starts from the list: every box you carried in, the dose written on it, how many days are left, and what has already been substituted by a pharmacy somewhere along the way.

The refill half is where the limits sit. There is no store of ours out here; what exists is whatever the pharmacies around Duong Dong happen to be carrying that week, plus freight from the mainland that moves in days rather than hours. So the split is simple — a doctor reviews and prescribes, and getting the box into your hand depends on local stock. If you are already down to the last tablets of something that cannot simply stop, say that first and say it plainly. Nothing on this page is a reason to delay a hospital trip if you are unwell rather than merely short.

Pharmacies here sell the same molecules under trade names from manufacturers you have never heard of. Written out in generic form with the strength, a good half of the they-do-not-have-my-medicine calls resolve at the counter without anything being flown anywhere.

Pharmacy density drops off sharply once you leave Duong Dong. The resort strips at Bai Truong and Bai Sao have a shop or two for sunburn cream and antacids, and not much past that, which is worth knowing before a taxi.

Insulin and anything else that has to stay cold becomes a planning question on an island: how it travelled in the cabin, what a villa fridge actually holds at midday, and what a delayed crossing does to a cool bag. Mention refrigeration in the first message, not in the third.

Flights to the mainland are the practical supply line. A guest spending two nights in Ho Chi Minh City can collect a full course there with far more certainty than waiting for a box to surface on the island, and that is usually the advice given.

Nothing here is a shop. A doctor prescribes where there is an indication and declines where there is not, and prescription medicines are not advertised, bundled or discounted in Vietnam. If a message reads like a sales pitch for tablets, it did not come from this clinic.

If this is an emergency — trouble breathing, chest pain, heavy bleeding, loss of consciousness or signs of a stroke — please call 115 or go to the nearest hospital first. Please do not wait for a home visit.

What is included

Bring the boxes, or clear photographs of the labels: the brand name you know often does not exist in Vietnam, while the active ingredient usually does

The review covers interactions with anything started for the illness being treated right now, and that is the corner travellers get caught in

Certain categories cannot be reissued to a short-stay visitor under Vietnamese rules, and you hear that at the start of the appointment rather than at the end

You come away with a prescription in the local format plus a note naming ingredient and dose, so a pharmacist here and your own doctor back home can both read it

For a long-term condition this is a bridge back to your own physician, not a handover of that care, and the span is kept short on purpose

A rash that is spreading, lips or tongue swelling up, or breathlessness after a newly started tablet means 115 or the nearest hospital, not a message to the duty line

Questions we are asked

Questions we are asked

Can you post my medication out to the island?

Freight reaches Phu Quoc by air and by sea, and in the wet months both run slower than people assume; controlled medicines are not posted at all. Plan on days, keep a pharmacy visit as the fallback, and if the gap is dangerous the answer is a hospital rather than a parcel.

I lost my prescription from home. Can you reissue it?

Not as a copy of the original, which no doctor here can reissue. What happens instead is a fresh consultation: photographs of the boxes, the strength, how long you have taken it and why, and then a Vietnamese prescription in the doctor's own name. Bring the packaging rather than a memory of the colour.

Is a prescription written by your doctor accepted by a pharmacy out here?

A prescription from a Vietnamese-licensed doctor is valid across the country, so the paper is not the problem — the cabinet is. Expect to be offered a different manufacturer for the same molecule, and expect the counter to say no to anything unusual. Ask for the generic before you ask for the brand.
