Ventilator and oxygen care at home in Nha Trang

For a patient on a ventilator or home oxygen, what matters is not how quickly someone can arrive but whether everything is already in place: the equipment in the room, a nurse who knows the patient, and a refill chain that never runs dry. None of that can be improvised after a phone call, even with a team that lives in the city.

So we accept these cases in Nha Trang only as planned care, agreed in advance, with two things settled before the patient comes home: a named nurse from our local team assigned for the period, and a local medical gas supplier confirmed for cylinder exchange. If a patient is deteriorating now, please do not wait for us — that needs an ambulance and a hospital with an intensive care unit, and the number is 115. We would rather tell you honestly on the phone that we cannot take a case than accept one we cannot care for safely.

Cylinder exchange is the part that decides whether a case here can be taken on safely. Refills cannot be left to chance, so the local supplier is arranged and confirmed before the patient comes home.

Salt air is hard on equipment. Filters near the coast clog faster than inland, humidifier chambers grow film sooner, and a machine that was fine in a drier city needs checking more often here.

Power cuts during the September-to-December rains are the scenario families here have to rehearse. Every setup we hand over includes what to do when the mains drop, written down and practised once with the family before we leave.

If this is an emergency — trouble breathing, chest pain, heavy bleeding, loss of consciousness or signs of a stroke — please call 115 or go to the nearest hospital first. Please do not wait for a home visit.

Questions we are asked

Questions we are asked

My father is on home oxygen in Russia and we want to bring him to Nha Trang for the winter. Is that realistic?

Sometimes, and the answer is best decided before the tickets are booked, not after. We would need his current oxygen requirement, whether he is stable at that setting, and a named local gas supplier willing to serve the address. If his requirement is high or still changing, we would gently but honestly advise that a long flight is not the right plan for now.

Can you take over ventilator care immediately after a hospital discharge here?

Only if the handover was planned while he was still an inpatient. Equipment, settings, consumables and the nurse have to be in place on the day the bed is given up, which means the conversation starts days earlier with the ward. Discharge first and arrange care afterwards is the sequence that fails, and it fails at night.
